River Culture

The Mississippi River has inspired generations of Americans. The River influenced pioneers like Lewis and Clark to explore the vast wilderness of the uncharted West; it inspired pioneers like Memphis Minnie to become the first female performer to be respected as a singer and as an instrumental songwriter. The Mississippi River set the stage for Mark Twain’s works as a writer, and even birthed his name.

Our Big River continues to be a muse, a setting, a cradle for ideas and culture to grow and ripen. Great American ideas were born on this River and this is where they bloom. Great Americans, beginning with the first Americans, have created a unique American culture on this River since the earliest days of our history. But our history isn’t over yet.
