What better day to show our appreciation of the Mississippi River than April 22nd – Earth Day? Since 1970 Earth Day has been promoting the importance of protecting our environment as well as the wildlife that call it home. The first Earth Day was held on April 22nd, 1970. The establishment of Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency as well as the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts which all take steps to protect our environment from the strains of civilization. In 1990 Earth Day became a global event with 141 countries showing concern for the well-being of the environment. Today, Earth Day is celebrated all over the world with over 1 billion people participating.
All forms of pollution can cause serious illnesses in humans and animals. Pollution leaves visible and invisible marks in our environment. It is our duty as humans to protect it from harm and make it a safe place for all species to live. Today the Mississippi River is in danger. Water pollution is caused by the release of waste into bodies of water. This often includes agricultural wastes, sewage, and oil spills in addition to many other causes. Such pollution can cause serious illnesses and even death in humans and wildlife. Water is an essential element for life, so it is necessary that we protect our water sources. Individuals can take actions against water pollution by using non-toxic, organic household cleaners and pushing for proper city waste disposal. Pollution occurs everywhere, even in the workplace. My friend recently had an oil mist extraction service come to her workplace, it improves workplace air quality AND helps reduce pollution! 1 Mississippi campaign aims to reduce pollution in the Mississippi River through creating opportunities for people to take action in favor of the clean water, by raising awareness and putting River Citizens, everyday people like you and me, in touch with their Congress people. By helping with River clean-ups, voting for political candidates who make the River a priority, and supporting sustainable agriculture, River Citizens can take small steps to reduce pollution within our beloved Mississippi River.
Fighting against pollution is not only for aesthetic purposes but also for the health of all who call Earth “home”. Recovery from pollution is not going to happen overnight with a universal “cure all”. If everyone were to take small efforts to reduce pollution, we could greatly reduce the “carbon footprint” that humans have left on Earth. Earth Day should be celebrated every day, not just once a year. Make Earth Day 2012 the beginning of a life-long commitment to protect Mother Nature! Here are 5 suggestions for celebrating Earth Day 2012:
1) Plant native trees! Increase biodiversity levels around you while simultaneously reducing air pollution. The addition of trees on stream and river banks helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower erosion levels and provides homes for animals and insects.
2) Recycle! De-clutter your home and help the environment by taking aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and other recyclables to your local recycling center.
3) Plant a garden! April is prime time to plant some flowers or vegetables. Not only do plants nurture Mother Nature, you will also reap the benefits of their beauty and produce. In addition, plants produce oxygen, add moisture, and filter toxins in the air. What’s not for us to gain from adding more green to our lives?
4) Take time to smell the roses! Fresh air is good for the mind and body so take time to enjoy wonderful Mother Nature. Go for a stroll in the park, along the mighty Mississippi River, or visit your favorite outdoor spot. Maybe even take the time to collect litter that may be affecting the area. Plan a picnic with some friends, go for a bike ride, or enjoy an afternoon of fishing with your children or grandchildren. The possibilities are endless!
5) Become a River Citizen through the 1 Mississippi Campaign! Officially pledge to take small steps to make a big difference in protecting our beloved Mississippi River from pollution. We count on the Mississippi River, show the River that it can count on you!
