We love reminding people about all of the amazing facts and figures that flow from the Mississippi River. For instance, it’s 2,320 miles long, flowing from Lake Itasca, Minnesota, all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. The Mississippi River connects the lives and livelihoods of what some might consider widely disparate groups of people, like eagle watchers in St. Louis and Bourbon Street partiers in New Orleans. No matter where we live or how we spend our time, our Big River sustains us.
This Thanksgiving, as our country goes through turmoil, we here at 1 Mississippi have taken the time to reflect on something positive: the upcoming 40th anniversary of the Clean Water Act. This landmark environmental legislation guides the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in regulating pollutants in our country’s waters. Unfortunately, in these tumultuous legislative times, some members of the US Congress wish to remove rulemaking power from the Corps and the EPA.
Step up today and speak out in favor of our River by opposing the Barrasso/Heller Amendment to H.R. 2354, which seeks to dismantle the Corps’ and the EPA’s power to protect American waterways, businesses and citizens from pollution. Let’s show our Congresspeople how thankful we are for clean water and our democracy by exercising our right to both. You can take action today to help protect our water for future generations.
