Magic Moments
The first daffodils of spring are just one of the amazing magical moments our planet offers as a sign of the warming weather and shifting seasons. Winter’s quiet melts into memory as the natural world wakes up. Chirping birds, lawn mowers and kids laughing outside create an exciting, celebratory feeling. It’s no coincidence that Earth Day is celebrated during the spring when we are already celebrating the wonderful—and noisy!—natural world.
Though the southern River Citizens may experience spring earlier than the River lovers up north, we all experience a spring awakening along the entire length of the River. And, since spring weather leads to outdoor travels and adventures, we also all benefit from the changing season’s boom to our local economies.
Explore and Support River Towns
Every year, the River is a destination for travelers from throughout the U.S. and abroad. The word is out about the natural beauty and unique cultures of Mississippi River communities and tourism has become an important component in many River communities’ economies. Internationally, travel and tourism created 4.7 million new jobs in 2013 (in fact 1 in 11 jobs in the world are related to tourism) and contributed nearly $7 trillion to the U.S economy in 2013.
As we say often, it is a Big River and there are many ways to enjoy it. For travel inspiration, visit the Great River Road’s website; it offers information on a wide array of museums, parks and other River attractions to stir your dreams. For example, you can get out in nature in the 72 miles of Riverfront in the National Mississippi River and Recreation Area in Minnesota. Sip wine from a bluff overlooking the River at Aeries Winery in Illinois, be amazed at the huge saws at the Sawmill Museum in Iowa or enjoy the southern hospitality at the Delta Bohemian Guest House in Mississippi, which gives you access to what some call the best Blues spots in the Delta. An amazing new attraction along the River is the remodeled pyramid by Bass Pro in Memphis that includes a cypress swamp, restaurants, archery and shooting ranges, a bowling alley and a museum. Take a peek inside here!
It’s easy to forget about the unique attractions in our own backyards. This year whether you take a “stay-cation” or a major road trip, consider exploring areas along the River. You will be sure to experience some magic moments while supporting River communities with your dollars, ensuring these places are around for years to come.
