Mississippi River Network Member, The Wetlands Initiative has recently begun dismantling drainage tiles at the Grant Creek Restoration Project. The tiles were installed when the land was being used for agriculture. By rapidly directing water away from the land, the wetlands became dry. Not only were native plants and species no longer able to thrive here, but the land became unable to act as a sponge for floodwaters.
Thankfully, the Wetlands Initiative’s project has been met with great success. Native plants and animals have begun harkening back to their wetlands and the land has begun filling up with water.
